We hope it doesn't happen. But in the event that your car is stolen, we want you to know what you need to do, so we've outlined some of the first steps below.
First, make sure you are where you parked your car, that it wasn’t towed or repossessed. This may seem silly, but some people report stolen vehicles that aren’t actually stolen. Maybe they were looking on the wrong level of the parking garage. Maybe they parked in a tow away zone or missed multiple loan or lease payments.
In your first moments of panic, it is always best to take a few minutes to make sure there is no other possible explanation. If you think it may have been towed, you’ll have to check to see if your vehicle was impounded or repossessed. If you’re sure it was stolen, it’s time to call police.
When you file your report with police, some basic information is always helpful, including your vehicle identification number, your license plate number and your driver’s license. You’ll also need to provide a description of the vehicle, including model, year, color, and any features that set it apart from similar makes and models, like a bumper sticker or broken windshield.
Make sure to tell police officers if your vehicle has any hi-tech device, such as OnStar, that will help them locate the vehicle.
After you are done with the police, you’ll need to call your insurance company or Insurance Advisors at 720-210-9898. Again, you’ll need to provide a good description of the vehicle, a list of any personal property that was inside the car and where any extra keys are located.
Finally, if you still owe money on the car, contact the financing or leasing company
Chances are your garage door opener, vehicle registration and insurance card were in your vehicle. If you have GPS, you might also have your home programmed into the system, making it easy for the thief to find and get into your home through the garage. You probably should change your garage door settings and think about changing your locks. (Hopefully, you didn’t have a spare set of keys in the vehicle.)
One action that you can take now to protect yourself in case your car is stolen is to purchase comprehensive coverage, which usually covers your losses caused by theft.
Again, we hope you don’t have to deal with a stolen car this summer. But if you do, please know that we are here to help.
You also may contact us any time if you want to check your coverage or have any other questions. We can be reached at 720-210-9898.
