It’s that time of year – when we are enjoying time with our families on summer vacations. If you’re traveling by car, it’s always a good idea to have activities planned, so that your passengers don’t become too bored on the way to your summer destination.
After all, there’s nothing worse than that endless question: “Are we there yet?”
Here are a few ideas we came up to make those road trips entertaining for the whole family.
Counting Cars
Count the number of a specific type of car, such as a Volkswagen Beetle, that you see while traveling from one city to another. Whoever has the highest number by the time you reach your destination wins. If you don’t want to count cars, you can count cows, windmills or any other landmark that you see frequently on your drive.
The Song Quiz
Hum the first few lines of a popular song that the whole family knows. See who will be the first one to figure out the song – and those first few words. See who will be the first one to stump the crowd.
Geographic Places
Start with any place in the world. Let’s say London, for example. The next person has to think of a place that begins with the last letter of “London,” maybe “Nicaragua.” Whoever goes next will have to come up with a location that starts with an “A.” This game can really stretch your geographic knowledge because you can’t name any place twice.
Navigation Helper
Like Geographic Places, this will help your children learn their geography. All you have to do is print a map of your trip so that your kids can follow along as you drive. They’ll love to help navigate and learn about the stops along the way. Depending on your route, you can talk about the differences between major highways and country roads, and how they appear on a map. You can also show your kids the difference between small towns and major cities on a map, as well as how they can find state borders.
The Alphabet Game
Find words on signs or billboards that start with the letters of the alphabet, beginning with A, B and C. See which one of your passengers has the best eye and best knowledge of the alphabet.
20 Questions
One player thinks of a famous person, place or thing. Everyone else in the car gets to ask 20 “yes” or “no” questions. Whoever guesses correct will get to think of the next famous person, place or thing.
Finally, have fun! Time with your family can create some of the most enjoyable and cherished moments you’ll have in your life.
