IA Team

As we excitedly look forward to our summer plans, Insurance Advisors - with help from the Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association - would like to offer some information to help you have worry-free travels.

Let's start with a few tips to keep your home secure while you are out of town:

1. Have your mail and packages picked up by a friend, forwarded or held by the post office.

2. Stop your newspaper deliveries. Here's where a friend or neighbor can help too. Ask them to stop by periodically to pick up any "free" or "throw-away" newspapers and circulars that get thrown in your driveway or hung on your mailbox or front door.

3. Arrange to have someone mow your lawn if you are going to be gone for more than a week. Long grass is a sure sign that nobody is home.

4. Lower the sound of your telephone ringer and answering machine so they can't be heard from outside of your home.

5. Use automatic timers to turn lights on and off in various parts of your home at appropriate times of the day.

6. Tell dependable neighbors and/or friends when you plan to be away so they can watch your house while you are gone. Better yet, reciprocate the house-watching duties to keep your neighborhood secure all summer long.

Here are a couple more ideas for your trip in general:

Check the coverages on your homeowners or renters insurance policy. Most policies provide coverage for off-premises theft, such as the theft of your luggage. If that happens, your insurer would pay to replace the luggage and its contents - less the deductible.

If you are traveling with expensive electronic equipment, jewelry or sporting equipment, you might consider a "floater" or endorsement to your homeowners or renters policy that would provide full coverage anywhere in the world for your items for a small annual fee.

If you plan to rent a car, you should make sure you know your automobile policy coverages.  Many policies are sufficient, and you won't need to pay for additional insurance offered by the rental company. We'll talk more about this next month.

One final note:  If you are planning an expensive vacation, you might want to consider travel insurance to give you some piece of mind. It comes in various types - trip cancellation, emergency medical assistance, baggage insurance or personal effects coverage.

Insurance Advisors stands ready to help you. Please give us a call at 720.210.9898 if you have any questions or want to make sure your travels are covered.
