August means the beginning of a new school year. For some, it’s a time of exciting change as they head off to a new school or college. For others, especially newer drivers, it’s a time for reminders about school zones, watching out for school children and avoiding distractions.
Whether you are driving to college, high school or work, here are some key things to remember as we head into the new school year:
• Obey the speed limit. Excessive speeds have been cited as one of the top causes of teenage car accidents. So remind your new driver and yourself to slow down. Going an appropriate speed gives drivers enough time to stop or react to any situation. This can be especially true in school zones and neighborhoods where children are walking along the road or crossing the street.
• Avoid distractions of all types. Let’s start with not texting or talking on the phone while at the wheel of the car. In Colorado, texting is illegal. It also is a dangerous distraction that has caused numerous motor vehicle deaths. It’s just not worth it. Wait until you are done driving to send that text.
Although not illegal, we recommend not talking on the phone while you are driving. Even with a hands-free device, the use of a cell phone has been reported to delay a driver’s reaction as much as having a blood alcohol concentration of .08 percent.
Loud radios and too many occupants in a car can also cause distractions. So remind your new teenage drivers to keep the music down and not squeeze too many friends in a car. In fact, there should never be more people in a car than there are seat belts.
• You’ve heard the slogan – Click it or ticket! It’s true. Seat belts save lives. Be sure to put on your seat belt before you pull out of that parking spot or garage. Make sure your passengers use their seat belts too!
• Another slogan, but a serious issue: Don’t drink and drive. You also should refuse to ride with a driver who has consumed too much alcohol. If you need a ride, call a friend, family member or taxi.
As a reminder for all of us who may be driving through school zones and behind school buses:
• Be sure to stop for all school buses that have their red lights flashing and are picking up or dropping of children. Expect the unexpected. You never know when a child may dart in front of your car. Also, don’t proceed until the school bus starts moving and has its red lights turned off, or until signaled by the school bus driver to proceed.
• Watch for children everywhere. During the school year, children are everywhere. They are walking or bicycling near a school. They’re gathering or playing near bus stops.
Give yourself an extra minute when you are backing out of your driveway to look and make sure there are no children in the area who are walking or biking to school.
