If we learned anything from this year’s fire season, it’s that homeowner mitigation efforts to create debri-free areas around homes really make a difference.
While it can be a factor in controlling the damage from many wildfires, officials were sure to recognize the difference homeowner mitigation efforts made in two of this year’s fires.
First, firefighters credited those homeowner efforts with saving homes during the Cold Springs fire near Boulder. Then, in a later summer wildfire that burned southwest of Parachute, Bureau of Land Management officials said the damage was substantially lessened because property owners had cleared vegetation.
Now that it's the time of year when we are cleaning up our yards, we thought we'd share a few extra tasks you can complete during your fall clean-up to reduce the chances of losing your home to a spreading fire in the future.
First, keep in mind that it is recommended that you have a minimum of 25 to 30 feet of defensible space around your home. That means areas that are free of flammable materials.
So, while you are doing your fall clean-up, take a little extra time to:
• Prune shrubs and lower hanging tree branches.
• Remove dead plant materials, such as dry grass, dead leaves and branches from around your home and under patio decks.
• If you have lots of tree leaves and/or pine needles that have fallen from your trees, rake them up. After you’ve done your yard, take a look up and clean your roofs and gutters of any fallen leaves and miscellaneous garbage that collects there.
• Inspect your shingles. Replace any that are loose or missing. This will keep your home protected during the winter months, but it will also prevent ember penetration next fire season.
• Start thinking about replacing vegetation with nonflammable landscaping materials next growing season.
