It’s December and life is starting to get a little bit crazy. We’re all running around doing our holiday shopping, attending festive gatherings and more.
It’s easy to become distracted. Insurance Advisors doesn’t want you to become the victim of a thief or opportunist, so here are some tips on shopping safely this holiday season.
1. You may already do this, but it’s especially important to lock your car this time of year. In addition to locking your car, hide your valuables or shopping bags, preferably in the truck on a locked compartment.
2. Park and walk in well-lit areas and carry your keys in your hand. With keys in hand, you won’t be digging around to find them and opening yourself to attack. They also can be used as a weapon if anyone approaches you.
3. Stay alert to your surroundings. This applies to stores and malls, as well as parking lots. Don’t overload yourself with shopping bags, which can make you an easy target for potential thieves. Make sure you maintain visibility and mobility. You need to be on the lookout for any suspicious people or vehicles. If you do notice anything suspicious, make sure you walk quickly to a lighted area or back into a mall or store, or call 911.
4. Shop with family or friends. There is safety in numbers. But remember, you still need to remain vigilant and look out for each other.
5. Keep an eye on your children. If you are shopping with children, keep them close to you. Before you head to the mall, talk to them about going to a store clerk or security guard if you become separated. Make sure they carry with them a contact phone number so that you can be reached in case they do become lost.
Finally, there are going to be those packages that get delivered to your door. Thieves are on the lookout for these situations, with some even following delivery trucks so they can pick up packages shortly after they are delivered.
There are a number of ways to combat this. First, you can have the packages delivered to your workplace. That way, they won’t be left outside an empty house. Second, you can get your neighbors together and agree to watch each other’s homes during the gift-buying time of year.
By paying a little extra attention to these safety issues, we’re hoping you will enjoy the season to its fullest.
Happy holidays!
