It’s that time of year – when you are thinking about, planning and taking a well-deserved vacation.
If you are driving your car, you’ll probably look at road maps and plan your route. You’ll also make hotel or campground reservations. You may even investigate rest stops and/or restaurants on your route.
But there are a few additional tasks you may not have thought about – and they involve your vehicle. Please take a moment to look at the following extra precautions we recommend so that your travels go as smoothly as hoped.
First, ask a mechanic to perform a thorough inspection of your vehicle. This should include looking at your tires, including the spare, as well as your windshield wipers and fluid levels. There’s nothing worse than heading out on a great family adventure and then noticing that your oil needs to be changed!
Second, make sure you have an emergency kit filled with basic items that can help you, should any unexpected car trouble occur. This kit should include jumper cables, tools to change or repair a flat tire, a flashlight, small fire extinguisher, and hazard triangles to signal other motors that a disabled vehicle and its occupants are in the area.
In addition to the emergency kit, you’ll want to keep the following in your car as you travel: extra water and snacks, a cell phone charger, tire gauge, a small amount of cash, and paper and pencil.
These items are in addition to a first-aid kit, which should be kept at all times in your vehicle – not just during summer vacation. This kit should contain bandages, ointment and scissors.
Once you’ve got these things organized and ready to go, you should be all set for your trip.
If you’re not able to take a road trip, you might want to consider taking these precautions anyway since you’ll probably be driving to the pool and other fun summer activities and attractions. Mechanical trouble doesn’t limit itself to road trips.
