Just in case you wreck that hot new Beemer you scored this month, be sure you're prepared to file a claim with auto insurance companies.

The truth is you'll need all the help you can get if you want full coverage for your claims these days.

Insurance carriers are doing whatever it takes to turn a profit in a rough market and that means they'll be holding tight to their money bags when reviewing claims.

But thankfully there's a new guide that will help ease you through the claims process.

Written by the Consumer Federation of America, “Navigating the Auto Claims’ Maze: Getting the Settlement You Deserve," is an especially handy tool to have leading into the busy travel weekend.

"In other words, do not be surprised if the insurance company offers you less than you  think you need to pay for effective repairs or thorough medical treatment," the CFA says. "By carefully following the recommendations in this report, you will increase your chances of getting the insurance company to offer you a fair settlement."

The guide is simple and straightforward, beginning with how to report a loss, all the way through dealing with stingy adjusters and filing an injury claim. It also comes with a companion check list to be sure you've covered all your bases.

There are great tips on whether you should give your Social Security Number to the other driver's insurer (don't) and dropping your claims while still under treatment for an injury (better not).

Hopefully you'll be safe on the roads and won't need these tips at all. Remember, New York residents can still nab free $15 worth of NYE subway and cab fare from the Dept. of Transportation.
