Sport utility vehicles are often derided for being gas-guzzlers, but they're now receiving high praise after a recent study found them to be among the safest type of automobiles on the road.
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, drivers of SUVs are among the least likely to die in a car crash because of its electronic stability control, which helps prevent vehicles from rolling over after an accident.
"With the propensity to roll over reduced, SUVs are on balance safe than cars because their bigger size and weight provide greater protection in a crash," the reports finds.
While the SUV was one of the vehicle types with low driver death rates, the minivan had the most stellar rate, averaging 25 for every million registrations.
Among specific models, seven tied for the lowest average of 0 deaths per million registered vehicle years. The Toyota Sienna, Ford Edge, Nissan Armada, Honda CR-V and Land Rover LR3 were among them.
Auto insurance companies take crash tests into consideration when assessing rates, which means lower premiums could result for those who insure these models.
